Your VR Tutorial Will Be Skipped: Onboarding Lessons from First-Time User Testing
Lightning talk
First-time VR users are processing a lot at once: the content, the VR technology itself, the facilitator outside the headset, and technical support.
In usability testing with VR newcomers, carefully designed tutorials get missed, and voice narration turns out to be fragile, failing exactly when users need it most.
This lightning talk shares what first-time users actually do, and how to design "guided freedom": clear explicit text over object-like UI, and narration designed as if your user were on a phone call with someone else, where visuals and exaggerated cues do the heavy lifting. You'll leave with a set of directions you can apply straight to your own onboarding flow, whether you're shipping your first XR experience or fixing one that keeps confusing new users.
