When Fiction Is the Interface: Designing Natural UI / UX in VR film Nana Lou
Nana Lou is an award-winning VR animated interactive tale where you play a spirit accompanying a grandmother through her final moments — a story built on real nurse training in end-of-life care and grief psychology.
I'll walk through how we built gesture, pacing, and presence directly into the role-play, and how we translated delicate psychological research on dying and grieving into moments the player actually lives.
This talk shows what a piece of immersive interactive fiction can teach for more technical UI and UX practices : how storyworld logic and emotional storytelling produce a transformative user journey and interfaces that feel intuitive and rewarding
What you will learn :
- Reframed UX methodology to combine transformative user journey with emotional narrative
- Transferable techniques from role-play and narrative pacing to design diegetic interface
- Detailed VR user case for embodied UI using head tracking and hand tracking and practical lessons
