Background Execution in Flutter: Fighting Android's Process Death, Foreground Services, WorkManager
Background execution on Android is hard. Adding Flutter makes it harder. When Android kills your app's process, the Flutter engine doesn't survive gracefully: isolates vanish, plugin registrations are lost, and the engine needs a cold start before any Dart runs again. Most developers discover this in production. This talk exists so you don't have to.
We'll cover three pillars. First, process death, what happens to the engine lifecycle when Android reclaims memory, how to handle cold restarts, and why common patterns fail silently. Second, foreground services, starting and managing them from Dart, handling the notification, and staying compliant with Android 14's stricter service-type rules. Third, WorkManager, registering a headless engine in a worker, fixing unavailable plugins, and structuring Dart that runs outside the UI lifecycle.
Drawing from production experience, you'll leave with a concrete mental model and patterns you can apply immediately.
